Description: Documented buffer zones around wintering sites of Monarch Butterfly, 2003. To ensure the continuance of the monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus L., overwintering sites must not only be identified and preserved, but also purposely managed through grove enhancement and/or modification activities to favor clustering. The key, therefore, is active long-term habitat management based on sound scientific data, to favor winter aggregations. Leong (1999) has shown that purposeful modifications of a degraded overwintering grove can become again attractive to roosting butterflies. The sole aim of winter habitat management, therefore, is to maintain or re-establish conditions suitable for overwintering butterflies (Leong et al. 2004). Winter sites are usually associated with sources of water, such as pond, stream, morning dew, or nectar from flowering winter plants.
